About Us
It's only through the efforts of many that we're able to bring you Match Cabernet Sauvignon. From vineyard planting, farming and harvest to winemaking, cellaring, and marketing, we're a team committed to producing not just one of the finest wines in the Napa Valley, but in the world. We think we're well on our way to achieving that goal.
Who are we?
Randy Sloan and Sasha Match — Vintners / Owners
Yep, the buck has got to stop somewhere and with Match Vineyards, it stops here for a brief moment before it goes out to pay expenses.
Originally from New York, Sasha moved to the Bay Area after getting degrees in sociology and nursing from the University of Wisconsin. She went on to receive her Nurse Practitioner and Master's degrees from University of California, San Francisco and practiced for many years as an OB/GYN NP. She's now retired from medicine and concentrates full time on keeping Randy and their son, Alec, out of trouble. She also, by the way, has the best palate for wine tasting in the family.
Randy claims both Texas and New Mexico as his home state depending on his mood and the predisposition of the listener. After a fairly illustrious career in high school and a fairly non-illustrious career in college, Randy listened to his patriotic heart and the promises of cash bonuses and joined the US Army. He ultimately spent 8 years in Military Intelligence serving as a Russian linguist. Following a brief stint managing study-abroad programs in Eastern Europe, he fed his altruistic side by managing medical research programs for UCSF, and then finally succumbed to the call of the dot com “boom”. He’s been a wine nut ever since working as a waiter 20 years ago and now that he’s a winery owner, he is trying to change his ways and sell more wine than he buys for his own collection.
Alec is the future of Match Vineyards. Just ask him. Recently he was interviewed for an entry in the school year book. “Where do you see yourself in the future?” “Running my family’s winery,” he replied. Oh how proud he made his folks when they read this. That pride was short-lived though when we continued reading “...that is, if my folks don’t make it bankrupt first.”
We’ll do our best, Alec.
Cary Gott — Winemaker
If you are going to get in the wine business, Cary Gott is the guy you want to talk to. He has forgotten more about making and selling wine than we can ever hope to learn.
Cary is the fourth generation of his family in the California wine business. It's been a few years since Cary started as a cellarman for the Napa Wine Company, but along the way, he founded Monteviña Winery, Corbett Canyon, and later ran Sterling Vineyards and Mumm Napa Valley while serving as Executive VP of Production for Seagram Chateau and Estates.
Now, Cary focuses on the creation of new wineries and vineyards through his firm Vineyard & Winery Estates. In addition to Match Vineyards, his clients include Piña, Chappellett, Plumpjack, D.R. Stephens, Renwood, Fantesca, Round Pond, Pillar Rock, and Silver Rose.
Cary and his wife, Victoria, live in St. Helena. Their sons Joel and Duncan are in the food and wine business in Napa Valley and San Francisco with Palisades Market, Taylor’s Refresher and Joel Gott Wines.
It sure is nice to have this Napa Valley maven ready in the cellar.
Jim Barbour — Vineyard Manager, Butterdragon Hill
Ask for the top vineyard management companies in the Napa Valley and Jim Barbour and his crew from Barbour Vineyards are going to be on the short list.
With over 28 years experience in agri-business and grape growing, Jim knows how to grow grapes and has done it for some of the top vineyards in the Napa Valley including Grace, Match, DR Stephens, 100 Acre, Pillar Rock, Von Strasser, Revana, Husic, Blankiet, and Martha's Vineyard.
Jim also farms his own Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard and with Heidi Peterson Barrett makes an awesome wine from Barbour Vineyards.
Piña Vineyard Management — Vineyard Manager, Baconbrook
With roots in the Valley deeper than their vineyards’, the owner/managers of Piña Vineyard Management are 5th generation Napa Valley farmers. That's lucky for us, because Baconbrook's austere soil and lack of water provide special challenges but with worthwhile results.
In addition to our Baconbrook Vineyard, the Piñas farm some of the top vineyards in the valley including Bryant, Cafaro, Dina (Terra Rosa), Frank Family Vineyards, Gemstone, Hughes, Johnson (Bisou), Kapcsandy, La Jota, O’Shaughnessy, Outpost, Pahlmeyer, Roy Estates, Sawyer, Showket, Vogt Vineyards and Winston Hill.
They also put their expertise into producing their own killer Cab. Check it out at their winery's website: Piña Napa Valley.
